IT took a surprisingly short amount of time for things to begin coming together with the music program. As grumbly as Ash was to begin with, he and I were knocking items off the to-do list at a breakneck pace. We worked well together. We always had, but something about this was different. Ash seemed to innately know how to plan this project, and I was good at promotion and sweet-talking local businesses into donating goods.

We’d even come up with a name for the program: Heartbeat. Ash and I both played tempo-driven instruments in the Thorns, and so the name fit on a couple of levels. We would teach a few classes leading up to the big concert, while we were still in town, and then Jasmine would find a local instructor to take over on a more regular basis. Ash’s mom even contributed by suggesting a few names of local music instructors she knew. Indigo House was so excited about the whole thing that they decided to convert one of their common areas into a music space in the renovation designs.

Jasmine was a wonderful advocate for the project. She was always around to lend a hand with whatever I needed, often bringing me coffee or offering to stay late. It didn’t hurt that occasionally she would bring her beautiful golden retriever, Bella, along for break-time snuggles.

Despite all her efforts, Ash constantly seemed on edge around Jasmine. I couldn’t figure out why Ash didn’t seem to like her when Jasmine was going so far out of her way to help.

A pleasant exhaustion overtook me as the weeks trickled by. Ash and I had developed somewhat of a routine, driving to Indigo House or working at the kitchen table each afternoon. Making dinner together or grabbing something quick on the way home. Falling into his bed every night.

I wasn’t really sure what had changed, how Ash and I had gone from hooking up a couple of times to whatever was going on now. Our single-minded focus on Heartbeat left little energy for intense conversations about anything else. After the first night he’d pulled me into his bedroom, I never seemed to leave. The first few nights were a little awkward, with one or the other of us making up some excuse as to why it made more sense to share a bed. As the days went on, questions stopped being raised, and we simply both made our way to Ash’s room each night. A lot of the time we were too beat to get up to anything sexy, but having his solid body next to mine helped me to sleep better than I had in years.

Neither of us seemed inclined to instigate a conversation about what was happening. The walls of his house became our safe space, where we could just be. We sat a little closer on the couch when we watched sports. He found ways to touch me as we worked side-by-side in the kitchen. I kissed him good morning, good night, and dozens of other times throughout the day.
